The need for a TrueCrypt fork

Postby compul » Sat Jun 07, 2014 8:29 am

I will start collecting some opinions here. Feel free to contribute!

The maintainer of zuluCrypt commented here:
The project is alive and still actively maintained.More information about the project can be found in the project's main page located at: https://code.google.com/p/zulucrypt/

I think its important to make a distinction between TrueCrypt, the binary application and TrueCrypt, the on-disk encrypted format.

The format is well known and tcplay can create it allowing creation of TrueCrypt volumes and cryptsetup and tcplay can parse it allowing opening of TrueCrypt volumes.

With the above in mind.I do not think forking TrueCrypt, the binary is necessary. I do think more project should support this encrypted file format as a "cross platform encrypted file format".

The format is fairly dated but good enough and the creator of tcplay has the same opinion and he expressed it here: https://github.com/bwalex/tc-play/is...mment-44778858

I think we have a lot of catching up to do before we know as much about the TrueCrypt volume format as these guys! I read the header format and thought it looked OK... goes to show what I know :-)

I edited the Intro page to pull out my bullet list of complaints about the truecrypt.ch effort. The offending statements and documentation on the truecrypt.ch site have been removed, and hopefully we can work with them in a positive way. If you guys would rather leave in our list of complaints against truecrypt.ch, just undo my change.

Of course, I'll still flame them if they get in the weeds again :-) I'll try to be nicer this time. Now that CipherShed is on track to save TrueCrypt, it's easier for me to relax and play nice.

I liked the flame, but it's probably better this way :P. Not that we have some sort of position, and the TCNext forum really seems dead since it's back up.

They actually put "Shitlocker" in the list of names to pick from.

I laughed when I saw that. My respect for them rose slightly when I read it, but you've seen my kind of humor by now :-)

All their names have crypt in them, and frankly I'm tired of the syllable -crypt.

Why can't it be something totally new that sticks out, with character, like:
BubbleWrap
Saran
Hardener
HeatWeld
or just about anything that isn't used already and that will come up in Searches easily

I have a good idea. How about "CipherShed"?

I suggest a name that can also double as an action and be easily said in a sentence, such a google and DBAN.

I googled that name....

I DBAN'd that hard drive.....

I Truecrypted my hard drive, never quite flowed in a sentence.

I think something short, which can also be used in the context above would be good.
