auto-prompt

Heated discussions about long term goals please. Pretty much everything goes.

auto-prompt

After finding this as an alternative to truecrypt or bitlocker for windows, I thought I would throw my hat in the ring.
Something that would be useful, for me anyway, would be a UI prompt when the drive is inserted, so that we can very quickly unlock the drive if we are moving around.
I move around computer a lot, especially at college, and use my USB drive on them all for my own portable program installs (which would be nice on this to :D ), but it means I could have security on the drive, and make sure that my work doesnt get tampered with. Also there are some things on the drive that CAN'T fall into uncontrolled hands, mainly a load of portable program installs, and maybe some more slightly malicious pieces of code that are great for pranks.

There are probably a million and 1 different security issues with this, so maybe an option in the settings of the program, or on a drive by drive basis would be really cool. This was the main reason I used bitlocker, because of the popup password dialog, but now that I am using ubuntu on my laptop a lot, and use the drive sometimes on my tablet, something like this would be very nice to have, either now or in some future version.

Thanks,

Sorry for the late reply.

You're referring to: When a USB disk is inserted into your computer, CipherShed detects it and automatically promps for a password?

I think this would be difficult. Due to the plausible denyability that CipherShed strives for, it would be impossible to tell which USB drives are encrypted or not. There could be a simple check: "If filesystem is NOT ntfs or fat, then prompt for a password." However, that could have its own issues too, popping up for unformatted drives or an unrecognized format, and we'd need the code to support the detection of 20 different filesystems.

It might be a nice feature to be able to enable for users, but our goal is to keep it KISS with unnecessary bloat. I suspect this feature wouldn't get used enough (or would cause enough annoyance) to be considered unnecessary bloat.

Sorry if that sounded a bit harsh!

Ah, that sounds like a valid point that I didnt think of (plausible denyability), although I do think that it would be a good feature to use, especially for the casual user.
E.g, if there were a lower level of encryption that some how supported a check if a volume was encrypted or not, then people could use it if they wanted to. But not being particulally familliar with the CipherShed source, Encryption, or C++ particulally, I don't know how easy this would be, But it's something that I personally may look into.
Thanks for the help.
